The Functional Medicine Approach for Gut & Autoimmune Health

The gut and the immune system are one conversation. A large share of the immune system sits along the gut lining, deciding what to tolerate and what to defend against. When that barrier is under strain (from stress, blood sugar swings, under-fueling, infections, or medications), the immune system may stay on alert. Research suggests that this ongoing signaling can play a role in food reactions, inflammation, and autoimmune patterns.

That isn’t the body attacking itself for no reason. It may be the body defending under conditions it reads as unsafe.

In my work, gut and immune repair follows the same order as everything else: regulate first, then repair. Steady blood sugar, adequate fuel, sleep, and a calmer nervous system come first. Gut integrity and immune tolerance get rebuilt on that foundation, not before it.
